PhaseShift project at Parachute Market

The first incarnation of PhaseShift added multiple dimensions to the art and design market in DTLA. This seasons theme at Parachute Market  was exploring the concept Alone/Together.  (s) explored the concept from a quantum physics angle, delving into the nature of quantum reality, providing a lens through which the concept “alone” no longer seems to exist.

The project consisted of three explorations of current quantum physical concepts – quantum consciousness (performances Cleave, and The Together Entanglement), quantum biology and biofields (The Cut Leaf, and Hilbert Curve), and quantum entanglement (Hilbert Curve, and The Together Entanglement).

Each aspect of these quantum phenomena was explored through an art medium – performance, sculpture, sound, image – and current research articles and selected popular science articles were woven through the installation.

The space between art and science seems to shrink the more we understand about the universe.  As we start to grasp concepts like the fact that matter is actually a very uncertain proposition – it can be a particle or a wave –  or that particles can “communicate” instantaneously across vast distances we start to see that the reality we created for ease of understanding is not the final answer.   Most of the rules of the universe are actually uncertain, and exploring these questions looks and feels increasingly more like artistic exploration rather than hard science.

The Together Entanglement

For some time now physicists have been exploring the relationship between human consciousness and the structure of matter. Previously it was believed that a Newtonian material universe was the foundation of our physical material reality. This changed when we began to recognize that everything in the universe is made out of energy. Matter, at its tiniest observable level, is energy.  Human consciousness and intent, such as meditation, can influence it’s behavior and even re-structure it.

“A fundamental conclusion of the new physics also acknowledges that the observer creates the reality. As observers, we are personally involved with the creation of our own reality. Physicists are being forced to admit that the universe is a “mental” construction. Pioneering physicist Sir James Jeans wrote: “The stream of knowledge is heading toward a non-mechanical reality; the universe begins to look more like a great thought than like a great machine. Mind no longer appears to be an accidental intruder into the realm of matter, we ought rather hail it as the creator and governor of the realm of matter. Your Simple (Yes, Simple) Guide to Quantum Entanglement

 

Hilbert Curve

If we examine the structure of a human, the overriding conceptual designs we see are variations on the fractal theme, as with the rest of nature. DNA is packed according to a fractal pattern that is called a Hilbert curve. The brain appears to be woven with a Hilbert curve as well. The lungs are fractal. Blood vessels are fractal. Neurons are fractal. Every organ has a fractal pattern.

Each cell in your body contains the entire DNA helix – any cell in your body could create your entire self. We all also contain the same set of emotional responses. This is why there are universal principles, why art works, why music works. These hard coded responses are replicated in each human, it is only our environments and responses to them which differentiate us in almost all cases.

This is also fractal, an infinitely repeating emotional structure.

Presently we are able to reverse cellular differentiation – we can take an adult cell and turn it back into a cell that can become any other type of cell – revert it to its potential – pluripotent – state. This is the way we presently grow organoids for research.

I am therefore, as information, any woman. You are any and every woman or man.

At any and every moment we must have access, somewhere, to the source codes that produce these fractals (us) – because the fractal patterns that describe nature are always continuous. This must be the nature of us, since it appears to be a law of the natural world. If we are fractal, which we clearly are, then not only can each cell become any other cell, each of us could become any other human – if we were reversed to pluripotency (as an organism vs. just one cell), we could develop into any version of human that exists.

The Cut Leaf

The leaves are photographs taken by engineer John Hubacher. They are ordinary leaves, from which the top halves have been removed. As you can see, the form of the entire leaf is captured, though materially (as we presently understand the material nature of reality) there is only half a leaf.

This clearly indicates the presence of information beyond that which we readily see or accept. It indicates that we do not yet have the full picture of the nature of material reality. What type of sub atomic information encoding allows the entire form of the leaf, down to the finest details, to be recorded, in the absence of the macroscopic plant matter? Does this apply to human forms? What does this mean to our understanding of the nature of material reality?

Once we begin to accept that there is more to reality than what we see, which is generally accepted by modern science across the board – consider dark matter: we know next to nothing about most of the matter in the universe – we begin to open to concepts which once felt impossible.

Till the Soil

Consciousness is also fractal in nature. As we can all be any human, we are in a sense all humans. The concept of common consciousness is increasingly well accepted and has been shown through experiment multiple times. Common consciousness connects us all – so through the quantum nature of entanglement we are connected, and through common consciousness we are also connected. Mind and body, it seems, are woven through the fabric of reality. So by now it is clear – the consciousness of “alone” is a choice, a choice to ignore or cut oneself off from the overwhelming reality of connection. When one does this, one isolates and is no longer subject to the harmonious influence that is documented repeatedly in a feeling of “connection”.

The results of this can be horrific.

 

PhaseShift project continues

The PhaseShift installation at Parachute Market in DTLA was a huge success.  Great turn out for art and design.  The collective has been asked to expand the project, so more to come!  Thank you all for entangling with our interactive art and performance, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
